Tel Aviv Bauhaus treasures

Tel Aviv, in the footsteps of Bauhaus treasures

The German word “Bauhaus”, literally meaning « Building School », refers to an artistic movement that had a quick take-off in the years 1920’ in Germany. The idea is simple: to gather, in a single piece of art, any possibility of arts, whether on architecture, interior design, typographic, etc. In the early 30s, the Nazi regime will pressure to close the Bauhaus school, making this movement to export itself, abroad.
This period coincides with the uprising of the new city, Tel Aviv, created a decade sooner in the suburb of Jaffa. The city is hosting, since its creation, an increasing migration flow, and has to quickly urbanize and build itself in order to absorb its new inhabitants.

Among them, precisely, many former Bauhaus school students – and it explains this trend’s impact on the architecture of the city. Tel Aviv, unique example in the world, has more than 4,000 Bauhaus buildings, whose white-front facades contribute to its nickname “the White City”. Therefore, the immigration of artists fleeing the Nazi regime concretely changed the face of the city, which was name in 2004 by the UNESCO “an outstanding example of new town planning and architecture in the early 20th century”.
